U577:
The U577 was a Type VII-C "Unterseeboat" (U-boat) built at Blohm & Voss, Hamburg (yard No. 553) for the German Kriegsmarine. This U-boat (Feldpost No. M 44 228) was ordered 08 January 1940, laid 01 August 1940, launched 15 May 1941, and commissioned 03 July 1941 (KL Herbert Schauenburg as Commanding Officer). After commissioning, the boat was assigned training duties to "Baubelehrung U-Boote Nordsee, Bremen (Kriegsschiffbaulehrabteilung fur Unterseeboote Nordsee, Bremen). U-577 participated in 3 war patrols under 3 different commanding officers with no recorded ship sinkings. However, there is a recorded attack on the U-577 prior to its sinking where it was bombed by a Blenheim bomber in the North Altantic which caused only slight damage.

On 15 January 1942, the U-577, under the command of Herbert Schauenburg, was sunk by depth charges from a British Swordfish aircraft from Squadron 815/G (some sources state that the aircraft was from Squadron 230) at position 32.40N/25.48E northwest of Mersa Matruh. All hands lost (43 personnel).
