Spithead:
The Spithead was a cargo ship of 4,697 Grt built at London & Glasgow Eng. & Iron Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Glasgow for the Clyde Shipping Co., Ltd., Glasgow. The ship was launched 31 January 1899 and completed the following March.
Requisitioned for use by the British Royal Navy during WWI and defensively armed. No Photo Available On 06 April 1917 while on the Alexandria-Rangoon route in ballast, the Spithead was sunk by a torpedo fired from UC-34 (Robert Sprenger) at position 31.44N/31.46E in approximately 40 meters of water. One casualty reported, and the Master and Chief Engineer were taken prisoner.
