Pan Ocean:
The Pan Ocean was a 5,155 Grt Cargo Ship orginally built as the Gera in 1923 by the Blohm & Voss, Steinwerder Yard No. 404, Hamburg, Germany for the Hamburg America Line, Hamburg. Launched 14 April 1923 and completed 02 June 1923, she was 407 feet in length, 56 feet in beam, single screw steamship with a cruising speed of 12 knots. In 1926 the ship was taken over with the Deutsche Australische fleet. The ship was scuttled in Massawa, Eritrea (Italian Somaliland) in 1941 prior to Massawa's being captured by the British forces. Once Massawa was under British control, the ship was refloated on 08 September 1942 and beached while temporary repairs to the ship's hull were conducted, after which the ship departed Massawa on 02 May 1943 under tow by the S.S. Mantola and made passage to Karachi, India for repairs. Upon completion of repairs, the ship was renamed as the Empire Indus and was used by the British government as an MoWT vessel.
In 1944 she was badly damaged when the S.S. Fort Stikine exploded at the Victoria Docks in Bombay (now Mumbai). Subsequently repaired. Sold to Arden Hall SS Co., Cape Town, SA in 1946. In 1947 one source shows the ship as being re-named Bosveld by the same owner. Sold to Pan Ocean Navigation Co., Panama in 1948 and renamed Pan Ocean.
The "Pan Ocean"
On 06 April 1958 while bound Mormugao to Genoa with a cargo of iron, began taking on water and eventually sank at position 33.15N/27.55E. One source indicates that the S.S. Persic may have assisted in the rescue of the crew. Unable to locate validating information on this.
