HMS Naiad:

The HMS Naiad (93) was a Dido Class cruiser orderd from R & W Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. Ltd., Hebburn-on-Tyne for the British Royal Navy on 21 March 1937 under the 1936 Build Programme. Laid down on 26 August 1937 and launched 03 February 1939. There were delays in the completion of building of the ship due to damage suffered from air raids. She was finally completed 24 July 1940.

On 09 March 1942, under command of Captain Guy Grantham (DSO RN), the HMS Naiad sailed from alexandria as flagship of a cruiser force under KAdm Vian consisting of cruisers HMS Dido and Euryalus, destroyers HMS Kipling, Kelvin, Lively, Sikh, Zulu, Hasty, Havock, and Hero to attack a reported damaged Italian cruiser. Either the report was wrong, or the Italian ship was not located, and the ships turned back to Alexandria, joined by the HMS Cleopatra and Kingston of Convoy G64 from Malta. The group of ships were unseccessfully attacked several times by Italian torpedo planes and German aircraft. At 2001 on 11 March the HMS Naiad was hit on the starboard side amidships by a single torpedo fired by German submarine U-565 (Johann Jebson) north of Sollum at position 32.01N/26.20E. The ship capsized and sank after 35 minutes. 582 personnel of the ship's compliment were rescued with 86 lives lost.
