A view of the Louis Perrier in the Suez Canal at Port Said
The Louis Perrier was scuttled as a blockship in the Suez Canal at Port Said in 1956 during the Suez Canal Crisis.
After the cessation of hostilites, the process of removing the 40-plus ships scuttled in the canal began. A U.N. Salvage Team under the command of Lt. General Wheeler, along with the Dutch contingent of the team, placed a priority on raising the Louis Perrier because it was built by the Dutch only two years prior to being scuttled in the canal and was a most valuable pice of dredging equipment badly needed for maintenance of the canal. The Louis Perrier was pumped out, lifted, and floated by Dutch and Yugoslav ships. And then was towed to workshops in Port Fouad for repairs.
