The Imperial Transport was completed as a 4648 GRT Cargo Ship at Irvine shipyard, Middleton (Yard No. 528) 13 November 1913. The ship was 117.3 meters in length and 15.9 meters in beam, with a single screw and 11 knot cruising speed.

On 11 April 1917 the ship was torpedoed by German submarine UC34 (Robert Sprenger) without warning 140 miles Northwest-by-1/2 North at position 33.11N/28.30E. The ship's Master was taken prisoner.
