| Hamidieh:
This shipwreck is a bit confusing here. There are two references to the Hamadieh being sunk in two different locations on two different dates. After looking at the information it is possible that these are two different vessels. However, they were both Egyptian flagged sailing vessels with one being 80 GRT and the other being 85 GRT, and both were sunk by gunfire from a German submarine.
The first source indicates that the Hamadieh was sunk by gunfire on 13 October 1918 approximately 50 miles Northwest of Alexandria. The second source indicates that the Hamadieh was shelled by the German submarine U-596 (Victor-Welhelm Nonn) while on the Alexandria to Famagusta route for 7 minutes on 07 September 1943 at location 34.02N/33.05E. The source goes on to state that the stern portion of the vessel sank after 20 minutes and that the fore section continued to burn for about 8 hours. If anyone has any additional information on this vessel, it would be greatly appreciated if it could be sent to "info@shipwrecksofegypt.com" in order to update this page. |
