| Escaut: The Escaut was a cargo ship of 1,087 GRT built at John Cockerill S.A., Hoboken, Belgium (Yard No. 657) for Cie Nationale Belge de Transports Maritimes (Deppe). The ship was launched 26 Febrary 1938 and completed the following April with a length of 69.49 meters, beam of 11 meters, and a draught of 4.75 meters. Propulsion was provided by two 6-cylinder SCA diesel engines to a single propeller.
The ship departed Antwerp for the Near East on 26 april 1940 and was subsequently requisitioned at Alexandria for use as a British Fleet Auxiliary Transport in the North African theatre. No Photo Available On 03 August 1941, while carrying a cargo of 1,020 tons of ammunition,the ship was attacked, torpedoed, and sunk by Italian aircraft while at anchor in Attika Bay, Suez at 17.3 cables, bearing 232-degrees from the South Beacon Ships Head. The ship sank in position without the ammunition onboard exploding. 1 casualty reported (Oscar Adam), and 4 survivors, one of which later succumbed to his injuries.
Also damaged in the attack were the Belgium tanker Alexandre Andre and the British Tanker Desmoulea. References:
