Culloden Reef Wreck:
This is a steel wreck of a steamship from sometime prior to 1920 as indicated on Admiralty Chart 2681 (survey date 1920) and is located at 31.22.351N/30.07.963E. Nationality of the vessel is unknown but there is gun ordnance located in the area where one of the ship's holds would have been located. The wreck has been salvaged from the main deck and above and what remains lies in water ranging from 9-meters at the stern down to 16.5 meters at the bow. There are four small steam boilers still on the wreck but most of the other propulsion equipment has long since been removed. If anyone has any information on this wreck it would be greatly appreciated if it could be sent to "info@shipwrecksofegypt.com" in order to update this database.

Research Update April 2010:
In his book "Grey Shadows", local dive center owner/operator Dr. Ashraf Sabry states that the British cargo ship Garfield was attempting to outrun a German submarine during World War I and ended up running aground near Nelson's Island at Abukir Bay and that this is the wreck of that ship. Although numerous dives have been conducted on this wreck, no definitive proof that this is the wreck of the Garfield has been found on the site to date .0. In his book, Dr. Sabry does not provide any supporting evidence that this the same wreck. Research ongoing. |
