The Maritime History of Egypt dates back thousands of years, with the ports along the North Coast having been continuously active for at least the last 2300 years. On this page you will find links to pages which give a brief description of some of the archaeologically significant sites which are located throughout Egypt.

As there are always archaeological happenings going on here in Egypt, these pages will be updated on a regular basis.





                      Archaeological sites off of Alexandria's Coast:  A brief overview of some of the underwater archaeological sites                             which have been found just off the beaches of Chatby, Ibrahimieh, Sporting, Sidi Bishr, etc.




                            The Sunken Royal Quarters : More commonly referred to as "Cleopatra's Palace", located in Alexandria's
                              Eastern Harbor. Future site of an Underwater Museum.




                             The Pharos Lighthouse : One of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Lying just outside of Alexandria's
                              Eastern Harbor. Pillars, Columns, Capitols, Sphinxes and much, much more! Great dive site!




                             Montazah and Maamoura :  Located in a small bay east of Alexandria, and possibly the site of Taposiris
                              Parva, lies evidence of extensive maritime activity from over 2000 years ago.




                             The Sunken Cities of Abukir :  The sunken cities of Canopus, Menouthis, and Heraklion dating from before
                              the Ptolomaic period, located in Khaleeg Abu Kir. A truly remarkable underwater archaeology site.




                            The Battle of the Nile :  Located near the sunken cities in Abu Kir Bay, the shipwreck of Napoleon's flagship
                              at the Battle of the Nile, L'Orient, and the remains of 3 other ships from the battle.




                            Mersa Matruh :  Still relatively unexplored, but there is evidence of Roman trade and 18th century maritime
                              activity lying at the harbor's entrance.                              




                              The Sadana Island Shipwreck Project : The remains of an Ottoman Period trading vessel and
                               the excavation conducted by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology.
                              The Quesir Shipwreck : A Roman era trading vessel located near the ancient port of Myos Hromos.
                               
                              The Siwa Oasis :  Yes, there are numerous underwater archaeology sites located throughout the Siwa Oasis!
                               




                              Lake Nasr and the Nile :  Remains of ancient temples underwater in Lake Nasr and current surveys being
                               conducted in the Nile. Work in Underwater Archaeology has only recently began there.
